Long before it became a Swiss canton, the Aargau region was home to a Roman legionary fortress and then the ancestral seat of one of Europe's greatest dynasties. The Habsburgs – whose name comes from a castle near Brugg – rose from modest local counts to Holy Roman Emperors, ruling much of Europe for centuries. Their story begins right here in the rolling hills of Aargau.

Habsburg Castle – Birthplace of a Dynasty

Habsburg Castle (Habichtsburg):

  • Original name: Habichtsburg (Hawk's Castle)
  • Built ~1020–1030 by Radbot, Count of Habsburg
  • Located near Brugg in present-day Aargau
  • Gave its name to the entire House of Habsburg
  • Still standing today (partially ruined, but preserved)

Rise to Imperial Power:

  • From local Aargau counts, the Habsburgs expanded steadily
  • Rudolf I of Habsburg elected Holy Roman Emperor in 1273
    • First Habsburg emperor
    • Dramatically expanded family dominions
  • Habsburgs eventually controlled Austria, Spain, and much of Europe
  • Later ruled the Austrian Empire and Austro-Hungarian Empire
  • One of the most powerful dynasties in all of European history

Habsburg Lands in Aargau:

  • Controlled key towns: Baden, Brugg, Laufenburg, Rheinfelden
  • Strategic positions along Aare and Rhine rivers
  • Wealth from trade, river tolls, and agriculture
  • Aargau was their heartland before expansion eastward

Swiss–Habsburg Conflicts

The Confederacy Pushes Back:

  • The Swiss Confederacy formed partly in opposition to Habsburg rule
  • Battle of Morgarten (1315): Swiss forces defeated the Habsburgs
  • Battle of Sempach (1386): Major Swiss victory – Habsburgs suffered heavy losses
  • Swiss cantons gradually seized Habsburg territories
  • Aargau became both battleground and prize

Roman Roots:

  • Before the Habsburgs, Vindonissa (near Brugg/Windisch) was a major Roman legionary fortress
  • Established ~15 CE, housed ~6,000 Roman soldiers
  • One of the most important Roman sites in Switzerland
  • Vindonissa Museum in Brugg displays finds; amphitheater ruins still visible

Habsburg Castle near Brugg gave its name to one of Europe's most powerful dynasties! Built around 1020–1030, this modest hilltop fortress was home to the counts who would eventually rule the Holy Roman Empire, Austria, Spain, and much of Europe. You can still visit the partially ruined castle today – standing there, it's remarkable to think that emperors and empresses traced their lineage to this very spot in Aargau.
