The Canton of Bern stretches from the Jura Mountains in the north across the Mittelland plateau to the spectacular peaks of the Bernese Oberland in the south. It's the second-largest canton in Switzerland, covering nearly 6,000 square kilometers of incredible geographical diversity. The turquoise Aare River winds through historic towns, while above rise the iconic Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau - three of the most famous mountains in Europe. From gentle green hills to massive glaciers, Bern's landscape showcases Switzerland at its most spectacular.

River Characteristics:

  • Important Swiss river: 295 km in total length
  • Flows through the heart of the Canton of Bern
  • Source in the Bernese Oberland (Aare Glacier)
  • Passes through Lake Brienz and Lake Thun
  • Continues through the city of Bern
  • Ultimately flows into the Rhine

  • Forms a dramatic bend/loop around the old town peninsula
  • Natural fortification - water on three sides
  • The river has an emerald green/turquoise color
  • Popular for swimming in summer

Aareböötle Tradition:

  • Aareböötle - floating down the river on air mattresses
  • Popular local summer tradition
  • From Marzili pool to Eichholz
  • The turquoise glacial water is cold but refreshing

The Famous Alpine Trio: Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau

Eiger (3,970 m):

  • Highest railway station in Europe

Other Notable Peaks:

The Lauterbrunnen Valley in the Bernese Oberland has 72 waterfalls! The most famous is the Staubbach Falls, which plunges 297 meters from a hanging valley. The steep cliffs and numerous waterfalls inspired J.R.R. Tolkien to create Rivendell in 'The Lord of the Rings.' You can even walk behind the Trümmelbach Falls, which thunder inside the mountain itself!
