Nidwalden has been a stronghold of Catholic conservatism for centuries. This religious identity shaped its politics, its alliances, and its conflicts — most dramatically in the Sonderbund War of 1847, when Nidwalden joined other Catholic cantons in a doomed attempt to preserve their traditional autonomy against Protestant-dominated reform.

Catholic Identity & Counter-Reformation

When the Reformation swept through Switzerland in the 1500s, Nidwalden remained firmly Catholic. During the Counter-Reformation, the canton became a bastion of traditional Catholicism, welcoming Capuchin monks and reinforcing religious education. This created deep divisions with Protestant cantons like Zürich and Bern. Nidwalden's Catholic identity wasn't just religious — it was political, cultural, and tied to independence from Protestant-dominated cities that sought to impose their values on rural cantons.

The Sonderbund War (1847)

The Sonderbund ("separate alliance") was a coalition of seven Catholic cantons, including Nidwalden, formed to protect their autonomy and religion from Protestant-dominated federal reforms. When the federal Diet declared the Sonderbund unconstitutional in 1847, Nidwalden joined the military resistance. The war lasted only 26 days. Federal troops, better equipped and more numerous, defeated the Catholic cantons. For Nidwalden, this was a humiliating defeat — but paradoxically, it led to the modern federal constitution of 1848 that created the Switzerland we know today, with guaranteed rights for Catholics and federalists alike.

The Sonderbund War was short (26 days) and relatively bloodless (less than 100 killed), but it fundamentally reshaped Switzerland from a loose confederation into a modern federal state.

Remember: SONDER-bund = SEPARATE alliance (Sonder = special/separate), and CATH-olic = CONSERV-ative in Nidwalden.
