Canton Zug is governed by an 80-member Kantonsrat (cantonal parliament) and a 7-member Regierungsrat (executive council), managing just 11 municipalities with German as the sole official language. Politically, Zug leans center-right with a strong pro-business orientation — a philosophy that drives its famous low-tax strategy. Corporate taxes around 12% and progressive but low individual rates have made Zug the premier destination for multinational headquarters in Switzerland. This deliberate tax-friendly governance transformed the canton from a modest agricultural area into Switzerland's wealthiest per capita.

Government Structure & Demographics

Kantonsrat: 80 members (proportional representation, 4-year terms)

Regierungsrat: 7 members (executive council)

11 municipalities: Very few — reflects tiny and urbanized canton

German: Sole official language (~90% of residents)

Religion: ~50% Catholic / 17% Protestant / 33% other

Center-right politics: Pro-business, low-tax orientation — deliberate economic strategy

Corporate tax rate: ~12% (among Switzerland's lowest)

Population: ~130,000 residents, highest density outside major cities

Zug's low-tax policy is a deliberate governance strategy! The canton consciously set the lowest cantonal tax rates in Switzerland to attract corporations. With over 30,000 companies registered for 130,000 residents — one company per 4 people — this policy created enormous tax revenues despite low rates. The corporate wealth funds excellent schools, infrastructure, and public services, making Zug a model of tax-efficient governance that other cantons try to emulate!

Despite having German as the only official language, Zug is more cosmopolitan than many Swiss cities! The influx of international corporate employees has created a de facto multilingual environment — you'll hear English, French, and many other languages on Zug's streets daily. The proportion of non-Swiss residents is among the highest in Switzerland. The tax haven has created a mini melting pot in Switzerland's smallest canton!

Remember Zug government: Kantonsrat 80 members, Regierungsrat 7 members, 11 municipalities, German language, 50% Catholic / 17% Protestant / 33% other, corporate tax ~12% (lowest in Switzerland), center-right pro-business. Formula: small parliament + lowest taxes = wealthiest canton!
