Before Appenzell divided into two half-cantons in 1597, it was a single, united territory with a heroic story of independence. Both Ausserrhoden and Innerrhoden share the same proud origins: fierce mountain fighters who won their freedom from the powerful Abbey of St. Gallen. Their joint victory at the Battle of Stoss in 1405 became legendary, and together they joined the Swiss Confederacy in 1513 as the 13th canton. This shared heritage still binds the two half-cantons today, despite their later religious and political differences.

The Appenzell Wars (1401-1429)

Fight for Independence:

Background:

  • Appenzell was under control of Abbey of St. Gallen
  • Abbey demanded heavy taxes and feudal duties
  • Peasants resented abbot's authority
  • Desire for self-government grew

Key Events:

  • 1401: Appenzellers refused to pay taxes
  • 1403: Formed alliance with St. Gallen city (against the abbey)
  • Battle of Stoss (1405): Famous victory!
    • Outnumbered Appenzellers defeated abbot's army
    • Legend says a storm helped them
    • Became symbol of Swiss courage
  • 1429: Final peace treaty granted independence

Result:

  • Freedom from Abbey of St. Gallen
  • Self-government established
  • Alliance with Swiss Confederacy
  • Proud independence tradition

Joining the Swiss Confederacy (1513)

Becoming the 13th Canton:

Path to Confederation:

  • After independence, Appenzell sought protection
  • Allied with Swiss Confederacy during wars
  • Proved military reliability
  • 1513: Officially became 13th member of Swiss Confederacy

Significance:

  • First new canton in over 150 years
  • Recognition as equal partner
  • Protection from larger neighbors (especially St. Gallen)
  • Voting rights in federal assembly

United Period (1513-1597):

  • 84 years as single canton
  • Mixed Catholic and Protestant population
  • Shared government and institutions
  • No religious division yet
  • The division came later with Reformation

The Battle of Stoss in 1405 is one of Switzerland's most legendary victories! A small force of Appenzell farmers defeated the much larger army of the Abbey of St. Gallen. According to legend, a sudden storm struck just as the battle began, causing panic among the abbey's troops. The Appenzellers saw this as divine intervention and won the day. This victory became a symbol of Swiss courage against overwhelming odds and is still remembered today in both half-cantons.

Remember Appenzell's early history: Appenzell Wars (1401-1429) - fought against Abbey of St. Gallen for independence, Battle of Stoss (1405) - legendary victory (storm helped!), 1429 - final peace granted independence, 1513 - joined Swiss Confederacy as 13th canton, United period (1513-1597) - single canton for 84 years before religious division. Both Ausserrhoden and Innerrhoden share this heroic origin story!
