Appenzell Ausserrhoden has a unique geographic relationship with Innerrhoden - it surrounds its sister half-canton almost completely! This creates a rare 'donut' pattern where one canton encloses another. The complex, interlocking boundaries are the result of the 1597 religious division, which separated communities based on their geographic location (outer vs. inner) rather than drawing simple lines. Despite this unusual arrangement, both half-cantons cooperate closely and maintain their shared Appenzell identity.

Remember AR geography: 243 km² (small canton, 25th of 26), ~55,000 residents, Northeastern Switzerland (pre-Alpine, borders St. Gallen and Innerrhoden), Surrounds Innerrhoden (unique donut shape), 3 regions: Vorderland (north/Lake Constance), Mittelland (central/Herisau & Trogen), Hinterland (south/Alpstein foothills), Elevation 400-1,800m, Climate: temperate with Föhn winds. Small but scenic!
