Long before Basel-Landschaft existed as its own canton, the region around the Rhine bend was one of the most strategic spots in ancient Europe. Romans built a major colony here, bishops ruled the land for centuries, and Basel became the 10th member of the Swiss Confederacy in 1501. The story of Baselland begins with this shared past.

From Bishops to Confederacy (Before 1501)

Prince-Bishopric of Basel:

  • Before joining Switzerland, Basel was a Prince-Bishopric — a Catholic church territory
  • The Bishop of Basel ruled both the city and the surrounding countryside
  • This gave the church enormous political and economic power

Key dates:

  • 1460: University of Basel founded — the oldest university in Switzerland
  • Made Basel a major intellectual hub of the Holy Roman Empire
  • 1501: Basel (city and countryside together) joined the Swiss Confederacy as the 10th canton
  • Brought valuable Rhine River access and trade connections

Reformation (1529):

  • Basel officially adopted the Protestant Reformation
  • The Bishop fled to Porrentruy (now in canton Jura)
  • Church lands were secularized
  • Basel became a Reformed Protestant city

Governance (1501–1833):

  • The united canton was governed from Basel city
  • A patrician elite (wealthy merchant families) controlled politics
  • The countryside paid taxes but had almost no political representation
  • This imbalance would eventually tear the canton apart

The University of Basel, founded in 1460, is the oldest university in Switzerland — older than Basel-Landschaft itself by 373 years! Famous alumni include the philosopher Erasmus of Rotterdam, who taught there in the 1520s, and the artist Hans Holbein the Younger.

Remember the key dates: 1460 (University of Basel founded — oldest in Switzerland), 1501 (Basel joined Confederacy as 10th canton), 1529 (Protestant Reformation). All happened when Basel was still one united territory — the split only came in 1833.
