How many questions are in the Swiss citizenship test, and how hard is it?
Each canton decides. Bern sets 48 questions in 90 minutes; other cantons test you orally in the naturalisation interview. The handbook covers both: 525 practice questions for the written test and a chapter on the interview.
Are the citizenship test questions available as a PDF?
Some cantons publish old test series as PDFs, Bern and Aargau among them. They show the format but do not explain the answers. The handbook explains why the answer is right for every one of its 525 questions.
Is the free federal booklet enough to prepare with?
For the federal part it is the reliable reference, but it explains nothing and knows no cantons. The handbook builds on it and adds the canton chapters, the practice questions and the procedure.
Book or app: which is better for studying?
Both, in this order: read in the book, drill in the app. The book explains how things connect; the app repeats them until test day.
Is the handbook right for my canton?
Yes. You pick your canton once at purchase. Part III holds its lessons, practice questions and procedural facts; Part IV summarises all 26 cantons.
Which languages is the handbook available in?
German, English, French and Italian, the canton edition included. One purchase unlocks all four.
How long should I study with the book?
Eight weeks at one chapter a week is enough for most people. With less time, do the chapter tests first and read up where you slip.
Do I also need a naturalisation course?
Not necessarily. Courses cost CHF 150 to 300 and follow the same material. If you study on your own, the handbook and its practice questions are enough.
